Host Matt DeWolf welcomed Jeff Fazio, fourth-generation car washer and Preferred Car Wash Advisors consultant, to discuss people development, consolidation and the fast-evolving needs of modern car wash operators. “I was fortunate to grow up around this,” Fazio said. “I had no choice, you know, but what I saw is playing out and has continued to play out in our industry. Roll ups, consolidation, you know, understanding what you’re buying, how to make it work.”
Fazio traced his career from early days on the wash lot to leadership roles at Sonny’s and beyond, reflecting on generational change and the shifting talent landscape.
The conversation highlighted the proliferation of new operators and a parallel exodus of industry veterans. “Our industry has shelved a lot of great mentors from mentoring,” Fazio said, noting that both operators and manufacturers are feeling the loss.
Staffing and upskilling challenges are also changing. Modern washes need more customer service talent rather than simply those “who can turn a wrench,” further tightening the labor market.
While industry change is accelerating, Fazio remains optimistic about opportunities for both new and seasoned professionals. “There is still phenomenal opportunity either to work your way up through a large organization because the amount of work that they spin off is fantastic,” he said.
